romapada swami on do I have free will?
Written by Romapada Swami

Question: If all the living entities in this material world are parts of Krishna and Krishna wants all of us to go back to Goloka dham then why can’t he just by using his powers take all the living beings back to god head…why does he wants us to come by ourselves… why can’t he just take all of us back to home??

Answer by Romapada Swami: Please refer to Digest 1C as it answers your question.

Digest 1C: Krishna wants us to come back to Him

Q. If Krishna is all powerful and wants us to come back to Him, then why does He not simply do it?

The answer to your question, which you have said is a very fundamental one, rests on the understanding of the living entity’s free will. Because there is free will, the living entity can choose to misuse their free will. When this choice of misuse of free will is exercised by the living entity, the Lord may sanction it. But the punishment is also there along with the sanctioning, so that the living entity learns the lesson that misuse of free will will not bring happiness. If you look on the other side of the question, `Why is it that God does not restrict our free will so that we cannot misuse it?’, then you have a situation where love is also not voluntary but forced. That is not love, that is something else. In order for there to be real love for God, there must also be the opportunity for free will, including the misuse of free will.

  • Pujya Romapada Swami Maharaj,
Hare Krishna. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Please accept my humble obeisances.
Maharaj, Say that someone wants to follow Krishna’s instructions; but because of being weak, is not successful time after time. After a few tries, if his wish is for Krishna to take away his free will and force him to come to Krishna.; would that not be the weak person exercising his free will? His free will is for Krishna to take away his freedom and force him to surrender. Just a thought. Haribol.
Aspiring to be your most humble servant in Krishna Consciousness,
    Braja Hari das.
