Digest 00848: How do we reconcile the absence of dinosaurs in shastras and the differing glorifications of deities

Written by Romapada Swami

Question: Our shastras, which we regard as historically and spiritually significant texts, make no mention of dinosaurs—despite describing many other extraordinary creatures. Given the strong scientific evidence for the existence of dinosaurs, how can we make sense of this absence? The Ganapati Atharva sheersham which comes from Atharva Veda Samhita and Upanishad mentions Lord Ganesha as the source of Brahman. The glorification sounds similar to glorification of Govinda in Brahma Samhita. How do we understand these differences?

Answer by Romapada Swami:

Our scriptures make no mention of dinosaurs. The fact that there is no mention of dinosaurs does not mean that the Vedas are incomplete. It may mean many things, including the notion of dinosaurs being a veritable fact may not be part of the 8,400,000 species.

As far as the Atarva Veda, Samhitas, and the Upanisads mentioning Lord Ganesa as the source of Brahman, I would have to see the specific reference to make a comment. The source of everything, including Brahman, is the Parabrahman or Svayam bhagavan Krishna. See BG 10.8
