Understanding the Context

Digest 00864: Why some Gita verses omit Śrī Bhagavān uvāca even though Kṛṣṇa is speaking?

Written by Romapada Swami

Question: In the Bhagavad Gita, some verses explicitly begin with “Śrī Bhagavān uvāca,” while other verses spoken by Kṛṣṇa do not carry this marker. Yet Kṛṣṇa is still the speaker. How should we understand this?

Answer by Romapada Swami:

Bhagavan Uvaca may not be mentioned in each and every case when Krishna is speaking, continuous repetition is not required.

For example, each time Sukadeva Goswami speaks, his initial speaking may be introduced but in other circumstances his being the speaker may not be explicit.

In the same manner, there is only one speaker in Bhagavad Gita, and that is Sri Krishna Himself. Therefore, by inference and logic, Sri Bhagavan Uvaca need not be repeated each time; it is understood.
