Question. Is it OK to look for a spiritual master by asking the ones you would like to be Spiritual Master to learn more about you or should we wait for Krishna to appoint one to us?
Answer by Romapada Swami :
Yes, it is OK and indeed essential to seek a bona fide spiritual master earnestly and to learn about him by hearing from him and serving him. Simultaneously, one should depend on the mercy of Lord Krishna and pray. Lord Krishna reciprocates with such sincerity and prayers by sending the bona fide spiritual master into the devotee’s life. Thus, our effort and Krishna’s mercy – both are important!
Please refer to Inquiries into the Absolute digests 00223, 278, and 2J for detailed discussions on this topic.
Below are some essential principles to help guide in your search:
1) It is important to gain a clear, scripturally-based understanding of the qualifications and duties of a guru, as well as that of a disciple.
2) Finding a bona fide spiritual master is a spiritual and not a mundane exercise. One must go beyond external considerations such as material birth, looks, popularity etc. Rather, one must observe the spiritual master’s nature and qualities in the light of the scriptural indications mentioned in the scriptures.
3) When presenting one’s concerns or doubts before a prospective spiritual master, one should examine whether one’s doubts can in fact be dispelled. Both 2 and 3 above, when followed properly, build confidence and trust in how the spiritual master is purely and faithfully representing the disciplic succession.
4) Establishing a relationship based on service and inquiry (as indicated in BG 4.34) is important for this mutual confidence to grow and strengthen.
In summary, in most cases choosing or accepting a spiritual master is not an instantaneous affair, but a carefully deliberated decision.
I wish you the best in your earnest endeavor.
