Bhishma Definition of a Demon Demoniac Nature Dronacharya Taking Revenge on Drupada Kamsa Morality

Digest 00428: Kamsa and the Kuru Dyanasty

Written by Romapada Swami

Question: We hear that Kamsa had become the ruler of Mathura (where he made alliance with other demons, he married the two daughters of Jarasandha, he subdued or killed others) and his ambition was to be the Emperor even of all demigods.

Also we read and hear about Kurus, Bhisma, Drona, Yudhisthira Maharaja etc.
Many times they are also mentioned as emperor and ruler of planet earth.

So,

1. What’s the correct understanding? Because both parties are contemporary and physical distance is very small (Delhi & Mathura).
2. Is there any mention of Kamsa attacking Hastinapur? or
3. Why the righteous Kurus never protected the other tormented kings from exploitation of cruel Kamsa?

Answer by Romapada Swami: The Pandavas were cousin brothers of Krsna and were of similar age as Krsna’s. Kamsa was killed by Krsna when Krsna was only 12 years old.
Kamsa’s demise was many years before the Pandavas (King Yudhisthira) ruled.

The duration of Kamsa’s rule was not extensive. Prior to his tenure as King, his righteous and devoted father Ugrasena was ruling. Shortly after Devaki’s marriage to Vasudeva, Kamsa emprisoned Ugrasena and usurped the throne. Then he was killed by Krsna. So his reign was of short duration.

Before Yudhisthira became King, the blind Dhrtarastra was the ruling king within his dynasty, in a place-holding role for his sons. Assuming that the two kings Dhrtarastra and Kamsa co-existed, I am unaware of the details of the relationship between them or how they perceived each other.

We certainly do know that Kamsa was powerful beyond compare, whether by worldly estimation or heavenly.
