Digest 00487: The Sun and the Brahmajyoti

Written by Romapada Swami

Question: In the end of Srila Prabhupada’s Purport to S.B. 2.5.11 he says “the sun is the creation of the brahmajyoti, and the brahmajyoti is the effulgence of the Lord”. Can you help me better understand how the material sun relates to the spiritual light of the brahmajyoti? Srila Prabhupada is stating that the sun is a creation of the brahmajyoti.

Answer by Romapada Swami: From Cc Madhya 6.154, lecture Feb 1971

Just like the sun. Sun is situated in one place, and the sun’s energies are working, heat and light. Heat and light is working. The whole material creation is resting on the heat and light of the sun. That’s a fact. Similarly, this sun is only reflection. Just like moon is reflection of the sunlight, similarly, this sun is also reflection of the brahma-jyotir. And what is that brahma-jyotir? Brahmajyoti is the bodily rays, effulgence, effulgent rays of Krsna.

SB 6.3.12 Lecture Feb 1971

In Bhagavad-gita it is said: prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh [Bg. 7.8]. Prabhasmi. Prabha means the effulgence, the light. Sasi-suryayoh. It is not that… So sasi means “moon,” and suryayoh means “the sun.” They are not independently spreading this heat and light. They are simply reflections, reflection of the original of brahmajyoti.
