Accepting Guidance

Digest 00703: How to make the correct decisions in life?

Written by Romapada Swami

Question: Today this thought came to me that we are making so many decisions, but I am not able to decide which path is best. The general principle would be to look for things that best favor our Bhakti, but sometimes I feel there can be multiple choices in that situation also, like the choice of preaching or getting better devotee association, like living in Vrindavan or going out to a new place or a similar situation but in a small devotee community.

We should also take the guidance of a guru in our decisions but sometimes he may not be available, or it might not be possible to ask in every small situation.

Please guide how should we see such situations and make the best choice.

Answer by Romapada Swami:

Some of the examples you have mentioned in your question seem to be big decisions. In those situations, if possible and circumstances allow then one should wait till one can receive guidance from one’s higher spiritual authorities.

For other small decisions, one can sincerely pray for the Lord’s guidance and inspiration, and also one can at the same time actively make considerations based on one’s personal nature, compatibility, and needs. In the same spirit, you should also seek counsel from experienced local senior devotees who know your nature well, and from whom you can take some guidance.
