Digest 00579: How to Obtain the Blessings of Vaishnavas even when we are in Disagreement?

Written by Romapada Swami

Question:  We require the blessings of the Vaishnavas for our endeavors to be successful. Raghunath dasa Goswami had endeavored many times to leave home but was unable to do so. However, after being instructed by Lord Nityananda to prepare a feast for the Vaishnavas, and following that instruction, he was successful.

Sometimes we may find that we have various levels of disagreements with other Vaishnavas. In such an atmosphere, it can become difficult to obtain their blessings. Its, especially difficult when we bear no ill intent, but are misunderstood by others. If we find ourselves in such a situation, how can we overcome this obstacle, without necessarily compromising our position if it is something we feel that is essential?

There are few things that can be suggested, responsive to the information provided in your question

  1. Have an open dialogue with the devotee(s) involved. This may help in clearing the misunderstandings. It is best to have a personal conversation to avoid misunderstandings and thereby seek clarification. You may want to have a “village elder” or some neutral 3rd party present, to assist in assuring the dialogue remains within the realm of Vaisnava decorum.
  2. Listen to what other person has to say without filters and judgments. Be patient to hear them out and be present during the conversation. “Seek first to understand, before trying to be understood.”
  3. It is often hard to understand why someone is acting/behaving/saying in a particular way or what one is going through in their life. In such cases, it is sometimes better to give them benefit of doubt, when there is disagreement, especially amongst devotees.
  4. Always remember to be in the mood of service and pray and depend on Krishna for strength and intelligence to express yourself in appropriate and devotional manner.
