Offenses Against the Holy Name

Digest 00779: Is my holding material attachments offensive to the Holy Name? What to do?

Written by Romapada Swami

Question:
Regarding the tenth offense to the Holy Name, it is commonly described as follows.

“To not have complete faith in the chanting of the Holy Names and to maintain material attachments even after understanding so many instructions in this matter.”

I still hold many material attachments in my heart such as watching shows, scrolling on social media, and reading books by non-devotee authors. I realize how these things are hindering my spiritual development and I am thus trying to limit myself. Yet, are these lingering attachments offensive to the Holy Name and to my spiritual mentors who have given me “many instructions in this matter?” While these attachments are holding me back, is it offensive and thus resulting in my inability to experience bliss and attraction towards my japa practice?

Answer by Romapada Swami:

  • The answer is very clear: YES! Consider the conclusion of Siksastaka #2 as the answer. Now what to do? Siksastaka #3 provides the starting point. Then, continuing to practice with faith. Pantanjali Yoga Sutra #14 states the elements of practice.
  • Abhyasa is the effort to concentrate the mind.
  • It is firmly established by:
    1. uninterrupted cultivation (nairantarya),
    2. reverence / devotion (sat-kara),
    3. over a prolonged period of time (dirgha kala)

This is yoga.
